Modernising environmental law: insights from South Australia

Webinar

Jul 17, 2025

South Australia’s new Biodiversity Act marks the first significant rethink of Australian environmental law in years. It holds lessons for governments across the country working to update and strengthen their laws.

The new Act brings together previously separate legislation – specifically, protecting native vegetation, and protecting wildlife – but also introduces some ambitious provisions not yet found interstate.

Tis webinar explores the political and legislative journey of the SA Biodiversity Bill, including the role of the SA’s environment sector in negotiating key amendments and improvements with Government; the important reform proposals that were ultimately not successful (and why); and the lessons for environmental law reform across Australia, especially for NSW and the Commonwealth.

Speakers:

  • Kirsty Bevan – CEO, Conservation Council SA
  • Susan Close – Deputy Premier and Minister for the Climate, Environment and Water
  • Michael Cornish – Policy Lead, Australian Land Conservation Alliance
  • Cerin Loane – Special Counsel, Policy and Law Reform, Environmental Defenders Office
