Submission on the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) 2027 Update

April 24, 2026

Our submission is to support the strengthening of Australia’s occupational data, so it more accurately reflects the growing demand for and diversity of environmental roles.

ALCA has made a submission to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) consultation on its Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) 2027 Update, to support the strengthening of Australia’s occupational data, so it more accurately reflects the growing demand for and diversity of environmental roles across both the environment sector and the broader economy.

Skills and roles specific to environmental management, restoration and biodiversity are increasingly needed across a broader diversity of sectors; and yet current OSCA classifications mean that environmental management and professional expertise are largely under-recognised.

Our preliminary work, as outlined through our submission, indicates that environmental jobs and skills are emerging faster than the occupational classifications (and associated training and development investment) that describe them.

Our submission proposes updates to three existing occupation codes, recommends the inclusion of six new ones, and calls for closer monitoring of emerging environmental occupations.
