Nature Media Centre

A non-partisan initiative connecting newsmakers with a vast network of nature and environment spokespeople.

Australia faces a deepening biodiversity crisis, with ecosystems showing signs of collapse, and many species declining or heading toward extinction. Yet public perception does not reflect the urgency of the situation. Recent research shows that many Australians still believe nature is in good condition, reducing pressure on decision-makers to act.

At the same time, environmental journalism capacity in Australia has eroded due to shrinking newsrooms, fewer specialist reporters, and the rise of misinformation.

The Nature Media Centre recognises that lasting nature protection requires more than good policy and strong investment. It needs a public that understands what is at risk, sees themselves in the story, and feels empowered to take action or demand change. By elevating human‑centred narratives and amplifying diverse voices, the Centre helps Australians understand that biodiversity loss is not distant or abstract; it is unfolding in real places, affecting real communities, right now.

The Nature Media Centre exists to help bridge the gap between the ecological reality, media coverage, and public understanding; and provides a suite of services to support journalists and spokespeople to strengthen environmental storytelling:

Connecting media with spokespeople

The Centre hosts a growing national database of diverse, trusted voices including scientists, Indigenous land managers, farmers, and conservation practitioners, making it easier for journalists to access accurate information, expert spokespeople, and people with lived experience.

Brokering evidence‑based stories, insights and case studies

The centre curates nature-related news, interprets emerging research, and highlights stories that help audiences understand environmental challenges and solutions.

Delivering media training and capacity‑building

The centre offers media training, messaging guidance, and content creation skills to nature advocates, supporting spokespeople to communicate effectively and confidently.
