Strengthening the Case for Nature Report

March 12, 2026

A synthesis of the evidence showing why investing in nature makes economic, social and business sense.

Research shows that healthy ecosystems underpin Australia’s prosperity. One fact makes this especially clear: Around one‑third of Australia’s GDP depends directly on nature.

Yet despite this reliance, only a small fraction of that value is reinvested into protecting and restoring the natural systems our economy depends on.

Strengthening the Case for Nature

We have reviewed the research that already exists about why investing in nature makes sense, and built a clearer foundation for decision‑makers by:

  • Synthesising landmark research to pinpoint where the evidence for nature’s value is strongest — and where gaps remain
  • Testing these insights through agricultural case studies, drawing on a sector that has been leading the integration of nature into commercial operations
  • Developing practical recommendations to help government, philanthropy and investors direct more funding into nature

The next step is turning this evidence into practical, investable business cases that decision‑makers can confidently act on.
