ALCA's 2025-26 Pre-budget Submission

December 13, 2024

In the lead-up to the next election, the Federal Government has a pivotal opportunity to show the Australian public that it is serious about safeguarding our environmental, economic, cultural and social well-being.

ALCA welcomes the opportunity to provide a 2025-26 Pre-Budget submission to the Australian Government.

In the last Federal Budget, ALCA had hoped to see the Government buck the trend of chronic underinvestment in nature, as well as capitalise on the opportunity for co-investment, but unfortunately it did neither.

Federal environmental spending is so low that it does not get listed as its own item of expenditure in the tax receipts issued to Australian taxpayers by the Australian Taxation Office. ALCA's own estimates place government expenditure on biodiversity in the last fiscal year at about $475m – less than just 0.1% of the Federal Budget.

In the lead-up to the next election, the Federal Government has a pivotal opportunity to show the Australian public that it is serious about safeguarding our environmental, economic, cultural and social well-being – which is entirely underpinned by nature.

ALCA looks forward to seeing the budget that Australians want, need, and can be proud of.
